This initiative aims to bolster the electricity grid’s reliability and capacity to meet rising energy demands.

The loan guarantees will fund upgrades in the following states:
- Indiana
- Michigan
- Ohio
- Oklahoma
- West Virginia
These improvements are strategically designed to address growing electricity demands from data centers and artificial intelligence applications, as noted by Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
AEP’s Role and Impact
American Electric Power, which serves approximately 5.6 million customers across 11 states, primarily generates electricity from coal, natural gas, and renewable sources like wind and hydroelectric power. The recent enhancements will include:
- Over 2,000 miles of power lines replaced in Ohio, impacting around 1.5 million residents.
- More than 1,400 miles in Indiana and Michigan, benefiting 600,000 customers.
- Up to 1,400 miles in Oklahoma for 1.2 million people.
- 26 miles in West Virginia, serving 460,000 residents.
This project is expected to create around 1,100 construction jobs, contributing to economic growth in the respective states.

Wright emphasized this new loan guarantee as a forward step, distinguishing it from prior clean energy funding–highlighting that not every project initiated under the previous administration was viable.
