Trump Authorizes Secret CIA Operations in Venezuela

On Wednesday, Donald Trump confirmed that he had authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela. This decision represents a significant intensification of U.S. efforts to apply pressure on President Nicolás Maduro’s regime. The information was initially reported by The New York Times, referencing U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation.

Reasons Behind CIA Operations in Venezuela

Trump highlighted two primary reasons for this covert action:

  • Release of Prisoners: Trump asserted that Venezuela has been releasing a considerable number of prisoners into the United States. These include individuals from mental health facilities. He criticized this as a consequence of what he described as an open border policy.
  • Drug Trafficking: The president indicated that a significant influx of drugs from Venezuela is entering the U.S., predominantly through maritime channels.

U.S. Response to Venezuela’s Situation

During his remarks, Trump stated, “I think Venezuela is feeling heat.” However, he refrained from clarifying whether the CIA has been granted the authority to take direct action against Maduro.

This latest escalation underscores the growing tensions between the United States and Venezuela and reflects a broader strategy to counteract perceived threats to national security.
