Russell Westbrook Joins Kings for His 18th NBA Season

Nine-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook has officially signed with the Sacramento Kings, marking the beginning of his 18th season in the league. His agent, Jeff Schwartz from Excel Sports Management, confirmed the agreement.

Strong Connections in Sacramento

Westbrook has established relationships with several key players including Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine. Additionally, he has previous experience in the backcourt with Dennis Schroder. The point guard has mutual respect for General Manager Scott Perry and head coach Doug Christie.

Backcourt Depth for the Kings

The Kings have been seeking to enhance their backcourt, and Westbrook’s signing will address this need. Last season, the team ranked 28th in bench points and 29th in bench assists per game. His ability to serve both as a starter and a reserve will be invaluable to their roster.

Westbrook’s Career Stats

In the previous season with the Denver Nuggets, Westbrook played 75 games, starting 36. His averages included:

  • 13.3 points per game
  • 6.1 assists per game
  • 4.9 rebounds per game
  • 1.4 steals per game
  • 44.9% shooting from the field

Notably, he achieved a career-best 52% on two-point shots during the 2024-25 season. Over the last three seasons, Westbrook has come off the bench in 145 of the 216 games he played and was recognized in the top 10 for Sixth Man of the Year voting each year.

Historic Achievements

As a record-holder, Westbrook owns the highest number of triple-doubles in NBA history with 203. He is also one of only two players, alongside LeBron James, to score over 25,000 points, grab 8,000 rebounds, and dish out 8,000 assists in their NBA career. With 26,205 career points to date, he is just 506 points away from surpassing Oscar Robertson as the highest-scoring point guard in NBA history.

Westbrook currently ranks eighth in career assists and needs 75 more to become the eighth player in history to reach 10,000 assists.

A New Chapter

Having previously played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he became a franchise icon, Westbrook’s latest move marks his seventh team in his illustrious NBA career, which has included stints with the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, and Denver Nuggets.
