Africa’s Qualified and Playoff Teams for 2026 World Cup Announced

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is taking shape as qualifying teams are being announced. Following the completion of the African qualifiers on October 14, 2023, the continent’s representation for the tournament has been significantly enhanced.
Africa’s Qualified Teams for the 2026 World Cup
With the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams, Africa gains an increased representation, now allowed at least nine spots. Previously, the continent had only five places. The qualified teams from Africa are:
- Morocco (Group E winner)
- Tunisia (Group H winner)
- Egypt (Group A winner)
- Algeria (Group G winner)
- Ghana (Group I winner)
- Cape Verde (Group D winner)
- South Africa (Group C winner)
- Senegal (Group B winner)
- Côte d’Ivoire (Group F winner)
Potential for Additional Representation
In addition to the nine qualified teams, there is a chance for a tenth African representative. The four best second-placed teams will enter a play-off in November, held in Morocco.
The victor will not secure their World Cup spot immediately. They must first pass through an intercontinental play-off in March, competing against six other teams from various continents.
Teams Competing for Play-Off Spots
The following teams will vie for a chance at the World Cup:
- Gabon
- Cameroun
- Nigeria
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
Gabon, having the highest ranking, will face Nigeria, while Cameroon will compete against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Only the winning team from these matches will continue on to the intercontinental play-off.
As African teams look toward the 2026 World Cup, excitement builds for a potentially stronger representation on the world stage. The continent’s rich footballing talent promises fierce competition in the upcoming matches.
