Nasser Taghvai, a prominent Iranian filmmaker, passed away recently, as announced by his wife, Marzieh Vahdatmehri, on social media. She expressed her sorrow, stating, “Nasser Taghvai, an artist who chose the difficult path of living freely, has reached liberation. Let us remember his flight.”

Nasser Taghvai’s Early Life and Career

Born on July 13, 1941, in Abadan, Iran, Taghvai gained fame in 1976 with the television series “Dai Jan Napoleon,” based on a novel by Iraj Pezeshkzad. This series marked his entry into the hearts of the Iranian public.

Pioneer of Iranian New Wave Cinema

As a key figure in the Iranian New Wave, Taghvai contributed significantly to the country’s intellectual cinema. He was described as a pioneer, bringing a fresh perspective and creativity to Iranian filmmaking.

Throughout his career, Taghvai directed six major films:

  • Araamesh dar Hozoor Digaran (1970)
  • Sadegh Karde (1972)

His work garnered numerous prestigious awards, including:

  • Golden Statue from the San Francisco International Film Festival
  • Golden and Silver Lions at the Venice Film Festival
  • Bronze Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival

Taghvai’s segment “Kashteh-ye Yonani” from “Kish Stories” earned him a nomination for the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Struggles and Legacy

Taghvai faced numerous challenges in his career, particularly censorship. His last film, “Chai Talkh,” began production in 2003 but remained incomplete. Despite these obstacles, he once remarked on the difference between his generation and those who came from the West, highlighting their grasp of working under tough conditions.
