Airports Including Portland and Sea-Tac Reject Kristi Noem’s TSA Line Video

Several U.S. airports have chosen not to broadcast a video featuring Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. The video, which first appeared on Fox News, is intended for display in TSA lines. In it, Noem attributes the federal government shutdown to democratic lawmakers and outlines the negative impact on TSA operations.

Refusal to Air the Video

Ports across the nation are rejecting this political message. Notably, the Port of Portland confirmed they received a request from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to air the video. However, they declined, citing the Hatch Act’s prohibition against using public assets for political purposes. Molly Prescott, a spokesperson for the Port of Portland, stated:

  • The Hatch Act prohibits political messaging by federal employees.
  • Oregon law also forbids public employees from promoting or opposing political groups.

Typically, TSA checkpoints feature welcoming messages and operational guidance but refrain from political content.

Other Airports Follow Suit

The Port of Seattle also announced that Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will not broadcast the video due to its political nature. A spokesperson expressed a commitment to finding bipartisan solutions to the government shutdown. They stated that support for federal employees affected by the shutdown remains a priority.

Similarly, Westchester County’s airport in New York has opted against airing the video. County Executive Ken Jenkins criticized the video for its alarmist tone and politicization of the TSA’s challenges amid the shutdown.

  • Ken Jenkins called the video’s message inappropriate and unacceptable.

Conclusion

As it stands, no airport has confirmed that it will air Secretary Noem’s video. This situation highlights the complexities and implications of political messaging in public spaces, particularly during times of governmental strife.
