“Today Evokes Strong Emotions”

On a notable day in the Middle East, U.S.-Israeli actress Natalie Portman expressed her emotions during a conversation with Cannes Film Festival head Thierry Frémaux at the Lumière Festival in Lyon, France. Born in Jerusalem, Portman described the day as profoundly emotional due to significant events unfolding in the region.

Emotional Day in the Middle East

October 7, 2023, marked a turning point in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. This day saw the tragic loss of 1,200 lives and the abduction of 251 individuals in Southern Israel. After over two years of captivity, 20 Israeli hostages returned home on October 13, 2025. The hostage release coincided with the release of more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

This exchange was part of a newly brokered peace plan initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump. It aims to address the tension that has caused the death of over 67,000 Palestinians during the conflict. Portman eagerly commented, “To see the end of the war today and the release and the swap of the prisoners and the hostages is really a momentous day.”
