Typhoon Remnants Hit Alaska: Dozens Rescued, East Coast Floods

Recent remnants of Typhoon Halong have led to significant crises in Alaska and the East Coast. In western Alaska, severe weather caused by the typhoon unleashed hurricane-level winds and flooding, resulting in urgent rescue missions.
Alaska Rescue Operations
Over 30 individuals have been rescued in coastal communities like Kipnuk and Kwigillingok. Unfortunately, three people still remain unaccounted for, according to authorities.
- In Kwigillingok, at least 18 individuals were rescued.
- Kipnuk saw a rescue of 16 people.
- Rescue aircraft were deployed to assess the situation.
Jeremy Zidek, a representative of the Alaska Division of Homeland Security, reported that some homes have floated away due to flooding. Several community members may be inside these homes, raising concerns for their safety.
Approximately 600 people are currently seeking shelter at a school in Kipnuk, while around 300 individuals are doing the same in Kwigillingok. These areas are known for their isolation, with limited roads and reliance on boats and snowmobiles for transportation.
Governor Mike Dunleavy assured the public that efforts are underway to assist those impacted by this devastating storm. Rescue operations will continue as conditions permit.
East Coast Flooding Warnings
Meanwhile, the East Coast is facing severe weather concerns as well. Forecasters predict significant coastal flooding from Virginia to New Jersey, primarily due to strong onshore winds and high surf.
- Flooding is expected to peak on Monday afternoon and gradually improve by Tuesday morning.
- A nor’easter has affected travel, resulting in road washouts and flight delays.
- Wind gusts exceeding 55 mph (89 kph) are anticipated in parts of New Jersey, Long Island, and southern New England.
New Jersey has been under a state of emergency since Saturday night. In response to the storm’s intensification, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared an emergency for eight counties and advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
Significantly, New York City’s Columbus Day Parade has been canceled as a precaution. Delaware’s emergency officials have activated the National Guard due to rising floodwaters, issuing voluntary evacuation orders in affected areas.
Impact on North Carolina
In North Carolina’s Outer Banks, severe storm damage was evident. Highway 12 near Buxton experienced ocean overwash, which has forced closures. Some beachfront properties have already fallen into the ocean, and additional homes are at risk of collapse.
This alarming weather continues to affect countless lives across different regions. Authorities are urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
