Parents, Students Demand Answers After Ajax School Cancels Overnight Trips

In Ajax, Ontario, parents and students are seeking clarification after Southwood Park Public School canceled all overnight trips. The decision has sparked considerable backlash among families, who received a notification letter on October 1. This cancellation affects Grade 8’s graduation trip to Ottawa and overnight excursions for Grades 6 and 7 to Claremont Nature Centre and Muskoka Woods, respectively.
Concerns Raised by Parents
Parents express frustration over the abrupt cancellation, questioning the lack of consultation prior to the decision. Peter Pukitis, a parent of a Grade 7 student, stated, “We really want answers. Why were we not consulted?” The school’s administration claims that overnight trips can create barriers for families due to cultural or personal circumstances and present financial burdens. The letter, signed by Principal Sarah Mitchell and Vice-Principal Sasho Nedelkovski, cites questions of equity and inclusion as part of the reasoning.
Call for Evidence and Community Engagement
Many parents have called for data supporting the cancellation. Erika Hill, mother of a Grade 6 student, expressed concerns about how eliminating the trips enhances inclusivity. She stated, “Offering experiential and outdoor opportunities builds teamwork and confidence.” Additionally, nearly 100 parents have joined a WhatsApp group to explore alternative solutions, including fundraising for families in need and offering more volunteer chaperone opportunities.
School Board’s Position
The Durham District School Board (DDSB) stated the decision was made carefully. The board reassured the community that discussions regarding the unique needs of Southwood Park are ongoing. However, they highlighted that schools make decisions about extracurricular activities independently. This comes in a backdrop where many Ontario school boards are managing financial challenges.
Cancellation of Other Events
This decision follows the recent announcement that three high schools under the DDSB will no longer hold proms due to rising expectations and liabilities associated with such events. School officials are currently re-evaluating this decision following student backlash.
Student Reactions and Initiatives
Students have also voiced their disappointment. Grade 7 students, Isla Marek and Arya Auglay, created a petition against the cancellation, gathering around 70 signatures. When they attempted to present their ideas for fundraising to the principal, their request was denied. Marek shared, “We were taught that we have voices…and then when we tried to use them, we were not able to.” Both students lament the loss of experiences that come with these overnight trips.
Looking Ahead
Despite the administration’s firm stance on the cancellation, parents and students continue to seek clarity. They are eager to engage in a constructive dialogue about the decision. Pukitis emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “We’re really looking for a seat at the table to find solutions amicably.” The future of overnight trips at Southwood Park is still uncertain, with many hoping for a reconsideration, especially regarding the Grade 8 graduation trip.
