OMR Metro Stations Transform into Vibrant Mini Malls

The upcoming Chennai Metro’s Corridor 3 is set to introduce a new concept in urban transit. As the metro trains begin operating on OMR, the stations will transform into vibrant mini malls, offering a range of services and establishments.
Modernization of Chennai Metro Stations
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has embarked on an ambitious project to integrate commercial amenities at nine stations along the 45.8-kilometer Corridor 3. This corridor connects Madhavaram to SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri. The project aims to enhance passenger convenience and boost revenue.
Commercial Spaces at Key Stations
- Nehru Nagar
- Kandanchavadi
- Perungudi
- Thoraipakkam
- Mettukuppam
- PTC Colony
- Okkiyampet
- Karapakkam
- Okkiyam Thoraipakkam
Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd. has been awarded the contract for the design and civil construction of these commercial spaces. They will construct up to three floors at the designated stations with an investment of ₹250.47 crore.
From Basic to Transit-Oriented Developments
Initially, these stations were designed as simple transit points. However, the decision to convert them into transit-oriented development spaces is expected to create a more engaging environment for commuters. This transformation will also allow CMRL to generate additional revenue through leasing out the commercial spaces.
Comparison with Other Developments
Unlike larger integrated commercial developments planned at locations like Mandaveli bus terminus and Thirumangalam, these mini malls will focus on smaller commercial setups. The Mandaveli project will feature underground entry and exit structures alongside an existing bus terminus. Moreover, a major intersection of Corridors 3 and 5 is planned for Sholinganallur, featuring an eight-storey structure.
Progress and Completion Timeline
Chennai’s Corridor 3 is part of the metro’s second phase, which comprises 28 underground and 19 elevated stations. Currently, construction is progressing at different stages, with completion expected by next year.
This innovative approach of transforming metro stations into multi-functional hubs seeks to enhance the commuting experience while providing local businesses with exposure to a steady flow of customers.
