Prime Video Cancels ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Countdown’ Series

Prime Video has officially canceled two of its recently launched series, “Butterfly” and “Countdown.” Both shows, part of the Amazon MGM Studios lineup, debuted during the summer but failed to sustain viewership momentum.

Overview of Cancelled Series

  • Butterfly
    • Premiere Date: August 13
    • Genre: Spy thriller
    • Lead Actor: Daniel Dae Kim
    • Plot: Kim plays a former U.S. intelligence agent who helps his spy daughter in South Korea.
    • Streaming Chart: Ranked on Nielsen’s top 10 for two weeks
  • Countdown
    • Premiere Date: June, concluded in early September
    • Genre: Action thriller
    • Lead Actor: Jensen Ackles
    • Plot: Ackles portrays an LAPD detective racing against time to foil a major conspiracy.
    • Streaming Chart: Also featured on Nielsen’s top 10 for two weeks

Details on “Butterfly”

“Butterfly” is based on a graphic novel by Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett. Its short-lived success in streaming charts was not enough to secure a second season. Released as a binge-watch option, the show had a brief two-week run among the top Nielsen ranks.

Details on “Countdown”

“Countdown,” created by Derek Haas of “Chicago Fire” fame, had a longer rollout with 13 episodes. Despite its initial success on streaming charts, viewer engagement declined as the season progressed. The series featured a notable cast including Jessica Camacho, Eric Dane, Violett Beane, Uli Latukefu, and Elliot Knight.

Future Projects

Both Daniel Dae Kim and Jensen Ackles have first-look deals with Amazon MGM Studios. Ackles is also set to appear in the upcoming series “Vought Rising,” a prequel to “The Boys.”

The news of the cancellations was initially reported by Deadline.
