Davids: Barnet’s Player-Mentor and Undisputed Leader

Edgar Davids, a notable figure in football, faced challenges during his tenure as player-manager at Barnet FC. His commitment to the club came under scrutiny as he struggled to manage his dual roles effectively.

Davids’ Leadership at Barnet

Since taking over as player-manager, Davids had a mixed record. His coaching team included Peter Landvreugd and Michel Schreuder, who often filled in during Davids’ absences. This situation led to confusion among the players regarding management responsibilities.

Absences and Impact on the Team

Davids was known to miss several away games—a decision initially sanctioned by club owner Tony Kleanthous. Speculations arose regarding his whereabouts during these times, with some suggesting he was attending social events or pursuing personal interests. However, Landvreugd clarified that Davids was often occupied with his clothing brand, demanding significant time and travel.

Hyde recounts a memorable incident when Davids abruptly left the coach prior to an away game, expressing discontent over travel time. This incident was indicative of growing tensions within the team.

Declining Interest and Departure

The mounting frustration from both fans and officials became evident. Davids was confronted by Kleanthous, who sought a commitment to attend matches regularly. Just hours after a 2-1 loss against Chester on January 18, 2014, it was announced that Davids would leave the club. At that time, Barnet found themselves in 10th place in the league.

Kleanthous remarked that Davids had begun to lose interest. While he acknowledged Davids’ efforts and contributions during his time at the club, it became clear that the arrangement was no longer sustainable.

Statistics and Achievements

  • Managerial record: 25 wins in 68 games.
  • Player contributions: 1 goal and 5 red cards in 39 appearances.

After Barnet: A New Chapter

Following his departure, Landvreugd and Schreuder took over as joint-managers but were replaced by Martin Allen just two months later. Davids’ next managerial role occurred in 2021 with Portuguese third-tier side Olhanense, where he served a brief six-month stint.

Despite the challenges at Barnet, Davids remained connected to the club. He served as an assistant manager for the Netherlands team during the 2022 World Cup and continues to express goodwill towards Barnet and its owner, Tony Kleanthous.
