New Hydro Poles to Be Installed Downtown Soon
The East Street reconstruction project is progressing steadily, despite delays caused by rain. PUC crews will replace existing hydro poles downtown, particularly north of Queen Street, starting next week.
Upcoming Hydro Pole Installation
Next week marks the initiation of the hydro pole replacement project as part of the East Street rebuild. Dan Bertolo from Tulloch Engineering, managing the project, provided an update on ongoing work.
Project Scope and Key Activities
The project focuses on various essential upgrades along East Street, which includes:
- Replacement of storm and sanitary sewers
- Upgrading water main infrastructure
- Building a granular road base
- Applying an asphalt roadway surface
- Adding curbs, boulevards, and sidewalks
- Incorporating landscaping and street furnishings to enhance the streetscape
Despite minor setbacks due to wet weather, Bertolo noted that progress has been consistent. He mentioned that installation of the sanitary main will continue next week.
Traffic Management and Public Access
Residents and businesses have adapted well to traffic adjustments. Although some restrictions have been implemented on the Bay Street through lane, access to Queen Street remains open.
Looking ahead, as weather conditions improve, work may shift to the storm sewer and watermain segments at the southern end of East Street. There are currently no anticipated changes to traffic controls or public access next week.
Projected Timeline for Completion
The East Street reconstruction is expected to achieve substantial completion by late fall 2026. Final touches, including the surface lift of asphalt, are scheduled for the following year, ensuring a fully functional and improved transportation corridor.
