HPEDSB Denies Delegation Request

The Hastings Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB) has denied a request for a public delegation at an upcoming meeting. This decision stems from a request to discuss busing issues.
Trustees Discuss Delegation Request
During a recent Governance and Policy Committee meeting, Trustee Ernie Parsons voiced his strong opinion. He emphasized that the local community is the priority, stating, “We work for the local community; they don’t work for us.” His remarks indicate a frustration with the board’s handling of public engagement.
Transportation Oversight
Board CEO Katherine MacIver clarified that busing falls under the jurisdiction of Tri-Board Student Transportation. She recommended redirecting the delegation request to this agency. “If someone wants to discuss student safety related to transportation, we can welcome them back,” she suggested.
Vice-Chair Kandis Hambly echoed this sentiment, stating the committee lacks jurisdiction over busing matters. She noted that Tri-Board is a multi-owner entity, not solely HPE, making it more appropriate for them to handle such discussions.
Concerns Over Public Engagement
Parsons raised concerns regarding transparency in the board’s operations. He argued against dismissing the request, stating it is vital to consider input from those interacting with students daily. “We talk about transparency, but we sure don’t practice it,” he remarked, highlighting the need for better communication with the public.
Role of Tri-Board Student Transportation
- Tri-Board Student Transportation serves multiple school districts, including:
- Limestone District School Board
- Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board
- Hastings Prince Edward District School Board
- Tri-Board does not hold public delegations at its meetings.
The decision to deny the delegation signals a broader discussion about the governance and engagement practices of HPEDSB. As the board continues to navigate these issues, the call for improved public transparency remains a key theme.
