Steven Spielberg Reveals Being Rejected by James Bond Films, Now Declines Offer

In a recent episode of “The Rest Is Entertainment” podcast, celebrated filmmaker Steven Spielberg shared insights into his unsuccessful attempts to direct a James Bond film. This revelation was part of his promotional activities for “Disclosure Day,” which is set to premiere in theaters on June 12.

Spielberg’s Repeated Rejections by James Bond Franchise

Steven Spielberg expressed his long-standing desire to direct a James Bond movie, dating back to his admiration for the franchise since watching “Dr. No.” After the monumental success of “Jaws,” he approached Bond producer Cubby Broccoli with an offer to direct. However, Spielberg was met with a firm rejection from Broccoli.

  • Request Made: Spielberg reached out to Cubby Broccoli after “Jaws” became a hit.
  • First Rejection: Broccoli declined Spielberg’s offer to direct a Bond film.

The conversation about Spielberg directing a Bond movie didn’t end there. After the success of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Broccoli contacted Spielberg to request the use of specific musical notes from the film for “Moonraker.” Spielberg negotiated, offering to allow the use of the melody in exchange for the opportunity to direct a Bond film, but again, Broccoli declined.

  • Second Attempt: Spielberg offered a deal after “Close Encounters,” which Broccoli also rejected.

Inspiration from George Lucas

While discussing his rejections, Spielberg recalled a conversation with George Lucas during the lead-up to “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Lucas suggested an alternative to Bond, introducing Spielberg to the concept of Indiana Jones. This chance meeting ultimately led to Spielberg directing the series.

“He told me the premise of the Indiana Jones series, and that’s how I got that job,” Spielberg remarked. Reflecting on his journey, he added, “If they ever asked me to make a Bond film now, my answer would be: ‘You can’t afford me.’”

Other Franchise Missed Opportunities

Aside from the James Bond films, Spielberg has had a history of engaging with major franchises. He also turned down the opportunity to direct the first “Harry Potter” movie. Spielberg prioritized spending time with his family instead of diving into a gigantic franchise.

  • Harry Potter: Spielberg declined the Harry Potter opportunity to be present for his children during their formative years.

In his reflections, Spielberg demonstrated contentment with his choices, particularly valuing time spent with his family over potential blockbuster films.

As the release of “Disclosure Day” approaches, audiences can also listen to the full interview on the podcast. Spielberg’s experiences reveal the challenges and decisions that come with a career at the peak of Hollywood.
