First Commercial Flights Depart from Revamped Montreal Airport Today

The Montreal Metropolitan Airport is set to embark on a new chapter today as it welcomes its first commercial flights. Porter Airlines is launching its service from the revitalized airport, located in Longueuil, Quebec. This marks a significant transformation from its previous identity as Saint-Hubert Airport.

Inauguration Ceremony with Dignitaries

A formal inauguration is scheduled for today, featuring a ceremony at the airport’s newly constructed terminal. The event will include local and provincial officials, notably Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier and Quebec Tourism Minister Amélie Dionne. Porter Airlines will commemorate the occasion with a water salute for its inaugural flight, a customary ritual in aviation.

Investment and Infrastructure Development

Porter Airlines has made substantial investments, reportedly hundreds of millions of dollars, in collaboration with its infrastructure partner, Macquarie. This effort aims to develop the airport into a major commercial passenger hub. The new terminal is expected to handle up to four million passengers annually.

Flight Operations and Growth Potential

  • Starting Monday, Porter Airlines will operate 138 weekly flights from the airport.
  • The international flights from this hub are projected to significantly increase accessibility across Canada.
  • Porter anticipates that the facility could rank among the ten busiest airports in Canada within two years.

Michael Deluce, CEO of Porter Airlines, likened the airport to a larger version of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. He emphasized its strategic location on Montreal’s South Shore, providing an attractive alternative to traveler congestion at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

Challenges Ahead for the Airline Industry

This ambitious expansion comes at a challenging time for the airline industry, with rising fuel costs affecting ticket prices globally. Despite these challenges, Porter Airlines is determined to establish a strong foothold in the commercial aviation market.

The new airport terminal is set to officially open in June, further enhancing the travel experience and operational efficiency for passengers. This revitalization of the Montreal Metropolitan Airport signifies a new era of air travel in the region.
