Authorities Investigate Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance After Mexico Grave Tip

Authorities are actively investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Savannah Guthrie, a well-known TV host. Nancy has been missing for over 100 days, prompting volunteers in Mexico to assist in her search.
New Leads in Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance Investigation
A recent tip has emerged regarding Nancy Guthrie’s potential remains. The organization Buscando Corazones Nogales, dedicated to locating missing individuals, received an anonymous call. The caller claimed that Nancy’s remains may be near a stream in Mariposa, located west of Nogales, not far from the Arizona border.
Search Efforts in Mariposa
Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, the head of Buscando Corazones Nogales, stated, “We were told that the woman’s remains were in the Mariposa area in a grave over a stream.” This area was previously searched from April to May, where volunteers uncovered over 25 unmarked graves containing at least 32 sets of remains.
- Search Location: Mariposa, near Nogales, Mexico
- Involved Organization: Buscando Corazones Nogales
- Graves Discovered: Over 25 unmarked graves
- Remains Found: At least 32 individuals
While the latest search in Mariposa yielded no evidence of Nancy Guthrie, Ortiz confirmed that future search operations would continue.
Updates from Pima County Authorities
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged the tip provided to the Mexican group. However, they have not yet been contacted by Mexican authorities regarding the investigation. An official statement indicated that the case remains active and credible information will be thoroughly pursued.
On June 11, 2026, authorities made an arrest near Nancy Guthrie’s residence. Alexander Zabel Jr., 54, was apprehended after complaints concerning his behavior surfaced. During this incident, Zabel was reported to be live streaming from outside the Guthrie home, and he faces charges of resisting arrest and public nuisance.
The Circumstances of Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance
Investigators believe that Nancy was taken against her will following the discovery of blood near the entrance of her home in Tucson, Arizona, back in February. Surveillance footage captured a masked individual on the porch during this time. Following her disappearance, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have actively sought information, offering a $1 million reward for leads that could help locate their mother.
In emotional pleas shared on social media, Savannah expressed the profound impact of her mother’s absence. She described the distress her family endures daily, stating, “Every hour and minute and second has been agony since then.”
Return to the Public Eye
In April, Savannah returned to her role as co-anchor of the Today show after stepping away in early February when her mother went missing. Her return was met with support from viewers, many wearing yellow ribbons to honor Nancy Guthrie.
This ongoing investigation continues to draw significant public attention as authorities and volunteers work tirelessly to uncover more information regarding Nancy Guthrie’s case.
