Blue Jays Activate Kirk, Promote Schneider; Varsho to IL, Heineman Designated
Alejandro Kirk has rejoined the Toronto Blue Jays as of Friday. The All-Star catcher is set to play in the team’s series opener against the New York Yankees. Kirk will assume the fourth spot in the batting order and catch for starter Trey Yesavage.
Recent Roster Changes
In addition to Kirk’s activation, the Blue Jays made several other significant roster moves:
- Daulton Varsho was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left wrist inflammation.
- Tyler Heineman was designated for assignment.
- Davis Schneider was promoted to the major league roster.
Kirk’s Injury and Minor-League Rehab
Kirk had been sidelined since April 3 after fracturing his left thumb during a game against the Chicago White Sox. Before his injury, he had a rough start to the season, posting a .150 batting average with one home run and two RBIs over five games.
He underwent rehabilitation with six minor league games, where he batted .167 and hit one home run. His absence was notable as Brandon Valenzuela performed well in his place, ranking second on the team with seven home runs and recording a .252 batting average along with 18 RBIs in 46 games.
Outfielder Daulton Varsho’s Update
Varsho has not started any games since last weekend and was a pinch-runner in one game during the series against the Philadelphia Phillies. His placement on the injured list is retroactive to June 10.
Tyler Heineman’s Struggles
Heineman, 34, had a solid .777 OPS as the backup catcher last season but has struggled in 2023, managing only a .154 batting average in 31 games.
Impact of Davis Schneider
Schneider has seen limited success this season, hitting .127 across 38 major league games. However, he has shown good plate discipline, with a .295 on-base percentage. Notably, he boasts an impressive .550 OBP in 14 games for Triple-A Buffalo.
Current Team Standing
The Toronto Blue Jays are currently three games under .500, with a record of 33-36. They sit 1.5 games behind the American League’s final playoff spot as they prepare for the upcoming game against the Yankees.
