Ukraine’s New Strike Drones Severely Damage Southern Russian Bridges

Recent developments in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia highlight the use of new mid-range drones by Ukraine. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being deployed with increasing frequency to target vital bridges supporting Russian military operations in the south.
Strikes on Strategic Bridges
The Ukrainian 1st Separate Assault Regiment reported a series of strikes over the past week on key logistical chokepoints. The targeted bridges include those in the Armyansk, Henichesk, and Chonhar areas, all crucial for transporting supplies from Crimea to the front lines.
Key Locations and Logistics Impact
- Armyansk
- Henichesk
- Chonhar
These sites are located between 50 to 75 miles from the active combat zones, serving as essential routes for Russian troops, arms, and fuel heading to the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
Drone Capabilities
Ukraine utilized two specific models of mid-range drones for these attacks. The FirePoint FP-2 boasts an 18-foot wingspan and carries a payload of 220 pounds. The second model, the Hippo, has a 7.5-foot wingspan and is equipped with a 77-pound thermobaric payload, along with an additional 88 pounds of explosives.
Evidence of Damage
Video footage shared on social media by the 1st Separate Assault Regiment shows dramatic attacks on the bridges, with visible signs of fire and structural destruction. Although independent verification of this footage has not occurred, officials in the region have corroborated the strikes.
Government Response
Vladimir Saldo, the governor appointed by the Kremlin for Kherson, confirmed on Thursday that the region faced at least 45 drone attacks targeting the Armyansk bridges. Preliminary assessments indicate some level of damage, with experts currently evaluating the infrastructure.
Additional reports mentioned approximately 20 drone strikes on the Chonhar bridge, resulting in traffic disruptions. Saldo’s administration has suggested detours for motorists and announced a halt to civilian bus services due to fuel shortages.
Implications for Military Strategy
The emergence of these mid-range drones marks a significant shift in Ukraine’s military capabilities. Unlike previous tactics that relied on sabotage or artillery, these drones can effectively operate within enemy territory, directly disrupting critical supply lines.
By utilizing mid-range drones, Ukraine can maximize damage without the cost implications associated with long-range assault drones. This strategic tool not only enhances Ukraine’s operational reach but also complicates logistics for Russian forces.
