BYD Unveils Plug-In Renault Clio Rival: Our Test Drive Review

BYD has introduced the Dolphin G, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that competes directly with the Renault Clio. This model represents a significant step for BYD, emphasizing its commitment to the European market.
Design and Dimensions
The Dolphin G showcases BYD’s latest ‘Ocean’ design language. It maintains a modern and appealing aesthetic, which is a departure from the brand’s earlier, less consistent styles.
Measuring 4160mm in length, the Dolphin G is slightly longer than its competitor, the Renault Clio. Additionally, it boasts a wider stance and an extended wheelbase, enhancing interior space. This creates a substantial trunk capacity of 425 liters, which includes a handy underfloor compartment.
Powertrain and Performance
The vehicle features BYD’s updated Super Hybrid powertrain, marking its debut in Europe with version 5.0, which offers improved efficiency. This system combines a 128bhp four-cylinder 1.5-liter petrol engine with two electric motors — a 161bhp drive unit and a generator. Unlike some PHEVs, the Dolphin G mainly utilizes the electric motors to drive the front wheels, with the petrol engine serving primarily as a generator to maintain battery levels.
Driving Modes and Range
- Entry-level Active models deliver a total output of 173bhp.
- These models include a 7.2kWh battery, providing an electric-only range of 25 miles.
- Higher variants, like the Comfort test vehicle, produce 209bhp and are equipped with an 18.3kWh battery.
- Comfort models offer an electric range of 65 miles and a total range of 646 miles.
Despite being a PHEV, the Dolphin G boasts impressive combined fuel consumption stats of 202 mpg, making it noteworthy for a compact hatchback.
Manufacturing and Market Focus
BYD positions the Dolphin G as a model specifically designed for European consumers, with plans to manufacture it in China initially. The company aims to establish production in Hungary in the future, further solidifying its presence in the European automotive landscape.
