Classic Sidecars Approved for 2026 Southern 100 Race by ACU

The Classic Sidecars have received official approval from the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) to participate in the 2026 Southern 100 Races. This notable event will be held from July 6 to 9 on the Isle of Man.
Background on Classic Sidecars Participation
Following the suspension of the modern Sidecar category at both the Isle of Man TT and Southern 100 Races due to safety concerns, the introduction of the Classic Sidecar class has been welcomed by fans and participants alike. This decision comes after an incident involving competitors Ryan and Callum Crowe, prompting a thorough safety review.
Safety Improvements and Community Support
Giles Olley, Clerk of the Course for the Southern 100, praised the rapid development of this new class. He noted, “To go from a blank sheet of paper to an excellent grid of Classic Sidecars in such a short space of time is a testament to the incredible spirit of the road racing community.”
- Greg Lambert, a Sidecar competitor, played a critical role in organizing the new class.
- Dr. Paul King at the ACU helped navigate administrative challenges to ensure timely approval.
- The project was supported by a private benefactor who fully funded the Classic Sidecar entries.
Technical Regulations for Classic Sidecars
Competitors in the Classic Sidecar races must adhere to specific technical regulations:
- Machines must be either two-stroke engines built before December 31, 1967, or four-stroke engines built before December 31, 1972.
- Sidecars must comply with ACU standing regulations.
- Classic three-wheeler machines with a front exit sidecar should be between 300cc and 1300cc.
- The use of Suzuki GT750 engines manufactured before December 31, 1975, is allowed at the organizers’ discretion.
