BC Ferries Wake Jumping Video Sparks Search and Rescue Alert

A recent video featuring a small boat performing wake jumping behind a BC Ferries vessel has raised serious safety concerns among search and rescue crews and marine safety officials. The footage, which gained significant traction on social media, depicts a motorboat closely trailing a ferry before attempting to leap off its wake.
Safety Warnings from Authorities
Both the BC Ferry & Marine Workers Union and volunteer search and rescue members have issued urgent warnings. BC Ferries acknowledged the video on June 4, emphasizing the dangers involved in navigating near large vessels. “Operating a personal watercraft that close to a ferry is extremely dangerous,” stated the company. They reiterated their commitment to safety and urged all watercraft operators to adhere to navigation rules.
Risks Highlighted by Experts
Chris Klassen, president of the Ships’ Officers’ Component of the union, discussed the potential hazards. He noted that boats operating close to ferries can disappear from radar, creating additional risks for both the watercraft and ferry crews. “There’s a serious danger to the people on the boat, and there’s a risk to our crews on the ferry as well,” he said.
Jonathan Cobham, a leader with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, echoed these sentiments. He warned that unexpected incidents, such as losing control or suffering medical emergencies, can occur when boats are near larger vessels. “In the ocean, it’s not a question of if things will go wrong but a matter of when,” he cautioned.
Legal Implications of Wake Jumping
BC Ferries stressed that the actions showcased in the video are illegal under federal marine safety regulations. The organization emphasized that safety in waterways is paramount. “We urge all watercraft users to keep a safe distance,” the statement read.
Transport Canada Guidelines
In response to the incident, Transport Canada highlighted the importance of small vessels understanding how to safely share waterways with larger ships. They provided the following guidelines:
- Maintain a safe distance from large vessels at all times.
- Be aware of dangerous undercurrents and wakes caused by larger ships.
- Understand that larger vessels have significant blind spots.
- Operate your vessel predictably and signal intentions clearly to other operators.
The episode has sparked a broader conversation about watercraft safety and the potential dangers involved with wake jumping near commercial vessels.
