Penguins’ Brunicke Becomes NHL’s First South African-Born Skater

The recent NHL debut of defenseman Brunicke has made history. At just 19 years old, he is the first South African-born skater to play in the league.

Brunicke’s achievement makes him the second player from South Africa to compete in the NHL, following goaltender Olaf Kolzig. Kolzig is notable for his 17-year career, where he earned an All-Star selection, a Vezina Trophy in the 1999-00 season, and the King Clancy Trophy in 2005-06.

Although Brunicke values his South African heritage, he has represented Canada on the international stage. He played for the Canadian team at the under-18 world championship. Additionally, he was invited to participate in the Canadian junior team’s summer camp this year.
