Widow Struggles as Firm Delays Husband’s Pension for Nine Months

The struggles of widows relying on timely pension disbursement have been underlined by recent challenges faced by Capita, a firm managing government pensions. Delays in processing pensions have left many vulnerable members, including widows, in distressing financial situations.

Backlog and Recovery Efforts

Capita inherited a significant backlog of pension cases, initially estimated at 37,000 but later rising to over 120,000 by February. To address these delays, the UK government implemented a recovery plan, which included:

  • Deployment of 150 government staff.
  • Additional 100 Capita personnel focused on urgent cases.
  • Introduction of an emergency interest-free loan scheme.

Capita’s Accountability

During a public accounts committee meeting in February, Capita’s leadership acknowledged the issues. They pledged to resolve urgent cases by the end of March. However, subsequent setbacks continued to plague the firm.

Data Breach and Contract Termination

In April, Capita faced further criticism following a data breach that exposed personal information of 138 members online. Consequently, the UK’s government terminated Capita’s contract to manage the Royal Mail pension scheme, citing:

  • Failure to meet critical transition milestones.
  • Lack of confidence in timely service transition.

Impact on Members

Paymaster General Nick Symonds expressed concern over the implications for Civil Service Pension Scheme members. He highlighted that many individuals had faced mortgage payment issues due to the delays, making their circumstances both “distressing and entirely unacceptable.”

Ongoing Commitment to Service

Despite the setbacks, Capita’s spokesperson commented on the company’s efforts to restore services, stating, “We are continuing to work with the Cabinet Office to establish normal service levels.” The firm emphasized its commitment to providing the expected level of service to its pension holders.

The ongoing issues underscore the urgent need for effective resolution to ensure that individuals, particularly vulnerable groups like widows, do not continue to suffer due to administrative delays. The firm has vowed to prioritize these members’ needs amid ongoing challenges.
