Where Will Quebecers Vacation This Summer?

Summer 2026 is on the horizon, and many Quebecers are already contemplating their vacation plans. Travel agent Myriam Boudreault, owner of Voyage Horizon, has identified several trending destinations based on recent observations and travel patterns.

Top International Destinations for Quebecers

With ongoing tensions in Cuba, many are looking for alternatives for sunny getaways. Popular choices include:

  • Mexico
  • The Dominican Republic
  • Jamaica
  • Panama
  • Costa Rica

Boudreault highlights that Costa Rica is particularly appealing for long stays, often exceeding two weeks. Many travelers rent vehicles to explore diverse regions within the country.

European Escapades

Europe remains a favored vacation spot. Historical sites, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultures attract many Quebec tourists. However, Boudreault cautions that traveling to Europe can be more expensive due to the Euro, which affects overall spending.

Countries like Portugal and Spain are more budget-friendly options. However, travelers still seek iconic destinations such as:

  • Greece
  • Italy
  • Albania

Albania, often overlooked when planning trips, is gaining popularity as a budget-friendly location with beautiful sights. Boudreault notes that while Croatia has seen increased interest, Albania is still in its early stages of attracting tourists.

Travel Trends to the United States

Travel to the United States has not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels. Boudreault reports a gradual recovery in sales for trips to U.S. cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago. However, many Quebecers remain hesitant.

Exploring Quebec at Home

A significant number of Quebecers are opting to vacation within their province. A recent survey by Événements Attractions Québec revealed that 95% plan to engage in at least one recreational activity locally this summer.

Popular activities include:

  • Festivals
  • Outdoor adventures
  • Exploring natural sites

François Chevrier, director of Événements Attractions Québec, highlights that outdoor activities, like hiking, typically have lower costs. Festivals also offer affordable options, including free performances and reasonably priced passes.

Budget Considerations

Compared to 2025, Quebecers’ budgets for summer activities remain stable. Many have shown caution in their spending. Approximately 18% of respondents remain unsure if they will need to cut their activity spending this year, with over half indicating they will adjust their budgets accordingly.

In addition, visitors from Ontario have explored Quebec, with 88% participating in local recreational activities, showing a desire to discover the province.

The trend towards local tourism reflects a broader shift, as travel to the United States becomes less appealing for many Canadians.
