Portsmouth’s Cinderella Run Continues with Exeter Win in N.H. Baseball

The Portsmouth High School baseball team, despite a rocky start to their season, has achieved remarkable success in the Division I tournament. After starting with a record of 1-8, their two consecutive wins at the end of the regular season secured them the 15th seed. With a final season record of 7-12, the Clippers pulled off a stunning upset against No. 2 Pinkerton in the first round on June 3, winning 3-1. Their magical journey continued with a thrilling 6-5 victory over seventh-seeded Exeter, the defending state champions, on June 6.

Portsmouth’s Cinderella Run Continues with Exeter Win

Portsmouth senior Zavier Lampert, reflecting on their unexpected success, stated, “We’re the No. 15 seed, and we’re now in the semifinals. Nobody expected this, but we believe in ourselves.” The Clippers will face No. 6 Londonderry on June 10 at Holman Stadium, following Londonderry’s 9-0 win over Spaulding.

Grit and Determination

Portsmouth’s catcher, Hugh Herter, attributed their victories to team grit. “I don’t know how we keep getting it done, but we do. We’re a good team together.” The Clippers secured their lead in the game against Exeter in the sixth inning, capitalizing on an error that allowed Herter to score, advancing Portsmouth to a 6-5 lead.

Coaching Philosophy

Head coach Tim Hopley likened their tournament journey to “house money,” emphasizing that the team is seizing the opportunity. “We just went out there and said, ‘Let’s let it ride,’” Hopley remarked. Portsmouth has defeated formidable opponents, including the reigning 2024 champions Pinkerton and the 2025 champions Exeter.

Exeter’s Journey Ends

Exeter wrapped up their season with a record of 13-8 after their earlier 2-0 win over Concord. Coach Bruce Joyce acknowledged the tough end to their campaign, praising Portsmouth’s performance. “They’re not playing like a 15 seed. They’re dangerous and have a lot of energy,” Joyce noted.

A Standout Performance

Freshman Cam Stacy has emerged as a key player for Portsmouth, exhibiting composure beyond his years. Coming in during a tense game with bases loaded, he managed to secure the last seven outs, demonstrating remarkable skill and focus.

A Thrilling Matchup

The game was intense, starting with Portsmouth leading 2-0 before Exeter’s Brennan Schimoler hit a three-run homer, shifting the momentum. Portsmouth then reclaimed the lead, highlighting their resilience throughout the game despite the ups and downs of the season.

With their confidence high, the Clippers are determined to continue their Cinderella run. “We’re not scared of being down,” Lampert affirmed. “We know we’ll get our runs.” Portsmouth is ready to face their next challenge as they aim for the championship crown.
