Former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain expressed his frustration regarding the decision to take lunch during the rain-affected Test match between England and New Zealand at Lord’s. The match was experiencing interruptions due to weather, and this controversial lunch break occurred despite bright weather.
Nasser Hussain Criticizes Decision Amid Rain Disruptions
On day three of the Test, the match start was delayed because of rain. Despite the improving conditions, umpires scheduled lunch for 12:20 PM BST. This decision drew criticism from Hussain as he labeled it “bizarre.” He questioned why lunch was taken during the sunniest part of the day while players were supposed to be playing cricket.
Frustration Over Rain Interruptions
Hussain discussed how the timing of the lunch break did not align with the weather forecast and the players’ needs. He highlighted the anticipation of fans who had come to enjoy a day of cricket at Lord’s, saying:
- “In the sunniest part of the day, everyone was having lunch.”
- “When the weather was good, we were eating. When it was bad, we were trying to play cricket.”
These comments were made during his commentary on Sky Sports, emphasizing the disappointment of fans and players alike. Shortly after lunch, the rain returned, resulting in only ten minutes of resumed play before officials halted the game again.
Match Status Update
As for the match situation, New Zealand had added just one run to their overnight score, bringing them to 37/3. They were chasing a target of 254 runs in the fourth innings to avoid falling behind in the series.
Despite the setbacks, New Zealand batsmen Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway returned to the field as the rain subsided, continuing their pursuit in a game full of interruptions.
