Stamps Open Season Against Blue Bombers, Eyeing Grey Cup Victory at McMahon

The Calgary Stampeders are set to embark on their 2026 CFL season with notable changes, particularly in their kicking game. Veteran placekicker René Paredes, who has been a cornerstone of the franchise since 2011, will not be on the field due to injury. This break marks the end of a remarkable streak of 247 consecutive games played, as Paredes has never missed a match in his illustrious career.
New Beginnings for Stampeders’ Kicking Game
Head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson acknowledged that the team has anticipated this situation for some time. Paredes has contemplated various non-football ventures over the years, making short-term contract extensions. Dickenson stated, “We’re prepared for this, but we hope to see René back on the field soon.”
Stepping in for the iconic kicker is Jude McAtamney, a 26-year-old from Derry, Northern Ireland. McAtamney previously spent part of the 2025 season with the NFL’s New York Giants. He expressed confidence in adapting to the Canadian game, saying, “Kicking’s kicking… it was a pretty easy adjustment.” McAtamney also shared insights from his chats with Paredes, who encouraged him to trust in his abilities.
Aiming for the Grey Cup
This season holds extra significance for the Stampeders as Calgary hosts the Grey Cup in November. The team enters this campaign after a strong 2025 season where they finished with 11 wins out of 18 games. However, they fell to the B.C. Lions in the West Semi-Final. Their primary goal for 2026 is to secure the franchise’s first Grey Cup title since 2018.
Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. emphasized the camaraderie among the players, highlighting their close-knit relationships during downtime. His rapport with key players like receiver Jalen Philpot, now in his fifth season, has fostered a solid team culture. Philpot noted the seamless transition built on last year’s momentum and stated, “I think people are not going to be surprised when we come out guns-a-blazing.”
Honoring Past Achievements
The Stampeders will commemorate their 2001 Grey Cup championship team this week at McMahon Stadium. That team, with a record of 8-10, surprised the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a memorable title run. Jeff Traversy, a member of that revered group, expressed joy in revisiting the team’s environment, stating, “The unity was what made that group so special. We fought for each other and loved each other.”
The 2026 season presents an opportunity for the Stampeders to forge their own legacy while looking to the accomplishments of their past. With new faces and a strong foundation, they aspire to bring home the Grey Cup title to Calgary.
