Canadian Carriers Halt Flights to Cuba Until Further Notice

Major Canadian airlines, including Air Transat, Air Canada, Sunwing, and WestJet, have indefinitely suspended flights to Cuba. This decision is in response to severe fuel shortages affecting the island nation.
Airlines Suspend Flights to Cuba
Initially, these carriers had anticipated resuming services between October 10 and November 1. However, as conditions in Cuba continued to worsen, they opted to halt operations until further notice.
Air Transat’s Official Statement
Air Transat confirmed the indefinite suspension on its website, citing the ongoing geopolitical situation in Cuba. The airline will directly communicate with affected customers to offer alternative options.
Impact on Travel
- Cuba is a favored destination for Canadian travelers, particularly from Quebec.
- Over 600 round trips were recorded by Canadian airlines to Cuba in January, according to Cirium, an aviation data firm.
Sunwing acknowledged that this news could disappoint clients and travel advisors, reiterating that Cuba has long been a popular choice for its customers.
Fuel Crisis and Economic Impact
Cuba has faced significant accessibility issues since February due to restrictions on Venezuelan oil distribution imposed by the Trump administration. François Audet, a professor at UQAM and director of the Canadian Observatory on Crises and Humanitarian Action, has commented that the situation in Cuba resembles the onset of a humanitarian crisis.

The Canadian government is currently advising against all non-essential travel to Cuba, indicating that shortages may worsen during the upcoming hurricane season.
