Cricket Star Criticizes IPL 2026 Pitches, Questions Real Skill Involvement

In a recent critique of IPL 2026, England cricketer Liam Livingstone expressed concerns regarding the pitches used in the tournament. He argued that the excessively high scores have made matches less engaging over time, calling the situation “quite boring.”
Liam Livingstone’s Critique of IPL 2026 Pitches
During IPL 2026, a record number of games featured scores exceeding 200, with teams successfully chasing totals of 200 or more on 17 occasions. Livingstone, who was acquired by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 13 crore, highlighted a particular match against the Mumbai Indians. In that match, his team successfully chased down a staggering target of 244 runs with eight balls remaining.
Livingstone noted that while the boundaries were relatively large, the flat nature of the pitches greatly favored batting. He stated, “We were playing Mumbai and we chased 230 or 240 in 18 overs. I thought it is actually quite boring. Just watching people go 6, 6, 6. There is no real skill involved.”
Impact of Flat Pitches on the Game
- Flat pitches provide significant advantages to batsmen.
- High scores diminish the excitement of the game.
- The role of the Impact Player becomes more pronounced.
Livingstone also commented on the performance of young cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from the Rajasthan Royals. The 15-year-old has made a significant impression on him. “I’ve never seen anything like it. This year was my seventh IPL,” Livingstone remarked on the Stick to Cricket podcast.
- Sooryavanshi hits the ball cleanly and rarely mis-hits.
- His development throughout the tournament has been remarkable.
Livingstone recalled instances where bowlers struggled against Sooryavanshi, highlighting his adaptability and skill. “We were bowling bouncers, and he was hitting it over third man. It left us wondering, where do we bowl?”
As the IPL continues, discussions about pitch quality and player performance will likely intensify. The blend of high-scoring games and emerging talents is reshaping the landscape of cricket in India.
