Cricket Community Supports 5,000 Cancer-Affected Families at #RedForRuth Event

The cricket community is set to unite for the eighth annual #RedForRuth day on June 5 at Lord’s. This special occasion coincides with day two of the Rothesay Men’s Test match between England and New Zealand, transforming the iconic venue into a sea of red.
Supporting Families Affected by Cancer
#RedForRuth began as a tribute to Ruth Strauss and has evolved into a significant charitable initiative within cricket. Since its inception in 2019, the Ruth Strauss Foundation (RSF) has provided support to over 5,000 families facing incurable cancer. The foundation has also trained more than 1,800 healthcare professionals and raised over £4.4 million, assisting parents in discussing difficult topics with their children.
Research Highlights Community Awareness
A recent survey conducted among Sky viewers revealed that one in eight people recognize the Ruth Strauss Foundation. Notably, awareness among cricket fans is substantial, with 81% expressing pride in the sport’s support for the foundation. This highlights cricket’s unique role in aiding families in need.
Impact on Families
According to RSF’s evaluation of its Family Support Service, over 83% of parents reported feeling better prepared to have challenging conversations with their children. Gemma, who benefited from the foundation’s support after her cancer diagnosis, emphasized the importance of such discussions.
Merger with Maggie’s
This year’s #RedForRuth event marks a pivotal moment following RSF’s merger with Maggie’s. This collaboration aims to enhance their outreach and resources, ensuring that even more families impacted by cancer receive needed assistance.
Ines Thiru, Chief Executive of the Ruth Strauss Foundation, praised the cricket community for their extraordinary support. She stressed that the merger with Maggie’s would amplify their impact, allowing greater access to resources for families.
Community Reflections
- Richard Thompson, Chair of the ECB, highlighted the significance of the support provided to families through RSF.
- Rob Lawson, CEO and Secretary of the MCC, expressed pride in hosting the #RedForRuth event for the eighth consecutive year.
#RedForRuth day serves as a powerful testament to the cricket community’s ability to extend its impact beyond the game. As Lord’s turns red again, it symbolizes support, understanding, and reassurance for families facing the challenges of incurable cancer.
