Steven Seagal, Candace Owens, Trump Official Attend Russia’s Top Economic Forum

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) has seen a unique presence of American figures this year, including conservative commentator Candace Owens, actor Steven Seagal, and Rodney Mims Cook Jr., a Trump-appointed commissioner. This marks the first time a U.S. official has attended the forum since 2017. The participation comes amid a climate of diminishing Western involvement due to geopolitical tensions following Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Key Attendees and Events
This year’s SPIEF, dubbed Russia’s answer to Davos, is emphasized by the participation of notable Americans:
- Rodney Mims Cook Jr.: Chairman of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
- Steven Seagal: Hollywood actor and a frequent visitor to Russia.
- Candace Owens: Conservative podcaster known for her controversial views.
The Kremlin welcomed Cook as a leader of the first official U.S. delegation to the forum in years. However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated he was unaware of any formal delegation participating.
Significance of the Forum
The SPIEF is crucial for Russia, especially given the foreign relations climate. It featured a diverse guest list, notably including:
- Saudi Arabia: Participating as the guest of honor with its energy minister scheduled to address the forum.
- China: Represented by Vice President Han Zheng, signaling a shift toward Eastern partnerships.
Interestingly, no representatives from Ukraine were present, although the conflict loomed large as drone strikes occurred in St. Petersburg shortly before the forum opened.
Panel Discussions and Highlights
During a panel titled “Russia–US: A Cultural Dialogue,” Cook shared his attachment to Russian architecture, presenting images of his home in Atlanta. He spoke warmly of his bond with Russian architect Anton Glikin, describing him as a “surrogate son.” Cook is involved in notable U.S. renovation projects, such as the White House ballroom and a proposed monument in Washington, D.C.
Both Cook and Seagal expressed their aspirations for enhancing U.S.-Russia ties. In contrast, Owens raised concerns regarding U.S. financial support for Ukraine, reflecting a broader sentiment among some Americans.
Future Prospects and Challenges
Despite the informal exchanges, discussions of significant geopolitical issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, were notably absent during the panel. Robert Agee, head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, acknowledged the existing “misunderstanding” between the U.S. and Russia but described business opportunities worth trillions that could be realized if relations improved.
Upcoming cultural exchanges were also announced, with American and Russian ice hockey players set to compete in Moscow on July 1, coinciding with U.S. Independence Day celebrations.
The convergence of these figures at the SPIEF illustrates the complex and often contradictory nature of U.S.-Russia relations amid ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. As global dynamics continue to evolve, the implications of these interactions will remain closely observed.
