B.C. Review Board Conditionally Discharges Child Killer Allan Schoenborn

The British Columbia Review Board has conditionally discharged Allan Schoenborn, who was convicted of killing his three children. This decision was announced by Chairperson Geneviève Boudreau. Schoenborn is required to attend a psychiatric clinic for treatment and may stay at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia, if deemed necessary by the board.

Mayor’s Reaction

The news of Schoenborn’s conditional discharge has sparked outrage among local officials. Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West expressed his disbelief, stating, “I feel sick to my stomach. It makes me want to vomit.” He voiced concerns about the implications of this decision, indicating it could lead to a full discharge in the future.

Safety Concerns

Mayor West criticized the justice system, stating it seems to prioritize offenders over the safety of victims. He called for accountability from the BC Review Board, noting, “This is just another example of a system that is badly broken.”

Conditions of Discharge

As part of his conditional discharge, Schoenborn must adhere to several stipulations:

  • Report any intimate relationships.
  • Maintain good behaviour.
  • Avoid possession or use of drugs and weapons.

Background

Allan Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible for the deaths of his three children—aged five, eight, and ten—in 2008 at their home in Merritt, BC. Following his conviction, he legally changed his name to Ken John Johnson in May 2021. In response, the BC government enacted legislation to prevent those convicted of serious crimes from changing their identities.

Future Review

The review of Schoenborn’s conditional discharge will take place in one year. The decision has brought considerable attention to the issues surrounding mental health treatment and public safety in cases involving violent offenders.
