IATA Reports Airlines Struggle with Jet Fuel Price Volatility, Limited Hedging Options

Airlines are facing significant challenges due to volatility in jet fuel prices and limited options for hedging their exposure. According to Daniel Chereau, head of fuel at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), many carriers are struggling to manage costs effectively.

Jet Fuel Price Volatility and Impact on Airlines

The price fluctuations in the jet fuel market have become increasingly problematic. Chereau highlighted that certain airlines with robust hedging strategies can mitigate some of the impacts. However, the soaring profit margins for refiners, referred to as crack spreads, are negatively affecting the airline industry.

Record High Crack Spreads

Recent data shows that the jet fuel crack spread in North West Europe reached an unprecedented level in March, exceeding $121 per barrel. This figure sharply contrasts with around $30 per barrel before the onset of the Iran war in late February.

  • Peak Crack Spread: Over $121 per barrel in March
  • Pre-Iran War Price: Approximately $30 per barrel

Middle East Jet Fuel Supply Concerns

The Middle East is a crucial supplier of jet fuel globally. However, its output has significantly declined due to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and recent attacks on energy infrastructure. This disruption severely limits the region’s capacity to produce and export jet fuel.

Demand Destruction in the Aviation Sector

Chereau pointed out that demand destruction is evident within the airline industry, although it is not primarily driven by fuel prices. Instead, flight cancellations are contributing to the decline in passenger demand. Furthermore, some airports are experiencing short-term fuel shortages.

  • Flight Cancellations: A contributing factor to demand decline
  • Fuel Shortages: Occurring at various airports

The ongoing conflict in the region raises concerns that such fuel shortages may become more frequent. Chereau emphasized that as the conflict continues, further demand destruction from passengers is likely.
