What is “Liberté 250”? France’s Special Mission in the U.S.

The Patrouille de France is preparing for its special mission named “Liberté 250.” This historic endeavor will take place from June 8 to July 4, 2026, as France celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence. Departing from the 701 Air Base in Salon-de-Provence on June 3, the formation of eight Alphajets, supported by an Airbus A400M for logistics, will be joined by a crew of 85 aviators.

Purpose of Liberté 250

The mission aims to honor the long-standing friendship between France and the United States, rooted in the events of the American Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1783. The French Air and Space Force plans to showcase its aerial capabilities to the American public.

Special Celebratory Features

During this tour, the aircraft will display a unique livery inspired by the American flag. They will also commemorate historical figures including:

  • Marquis de Lafayette
  • George Washington
  • Benjamin Franklin
  • Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
  • Josephine Baker

Flight Journey to the U.S.

The journey involves crossing the Atlantic, covering over 6,000 kilometers with four stops in places like Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, and Canada. This complex route necessitates significant preparation for both pilots and mechanics, as the training aircraft face increased mechanical stress.

Historic Flyovers and Events

The Patrouille de France will perform in various locations significant to U.S. history. Key highlights include:

  • June 9: Aerial display over the Statue of Liberty in New York
  • Philadephia: Flyover above the Independence Hall
  • Yorktown, Virginia: A tribute to the French victory against the British
  • June 22: A performance above Washington D.C. and the National Mall

Additional Engagements

In addition to memorials, the team will participate in major airshows, including those in Ocean City and Baltimore, alongside the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds. Furthermore, they are set to fly over during a match featuring the French team in the World Cup, running from June 11 to July 18, 2026.

Grand Finale and Return

The mission culminates on July 4 with a participation in a massive naval and aerial parade in New York City. After this celebratory event, the Patrouille de France will return to France, arriving in time for the traditional Bastille Day aerial parade on July 14 and continuing their annual tour until September 27, 2026.

A Brief History of the Patrouille de France

This is not the first international engagement for the team. In 2017, they commemorated the centenary of the U.S. entry into World War I with a seven-week tour. Earlier, in 2009, the formation undertook a global journey of 50,000 kilometers to mark the 75th anniversary of the French Air Force.
