Weekend REM Start Time Adjusted to Begin Later on Saturdays

The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is adjusting its weekend start times for summer 2023. This change will affect riders planning to travel during the weekends.
Updated Weekend Start Times
From June 6 to August 16, the first REM trains on Saturdays will begin their journeys at 7:30 a.m., compared to the usual 5:30 a.m. start time. Sundays will see a flexible schedule, with trains departing at either 7:30 a.m. or noon, depending on maintenance work scheduled for that day.
Purpose of the Adjusted Schedule
The later start times are essential for conducting necessary maintenance and testing. This period includes preparation for the expansion of the light métro to Montreal’s international airport, expected to open in 2027. Jean Aubé, spokesperson for Pulsar, the operating company of the REM, emphasized the importance of this extended timeframe.
Special Considerations for Riders
The REM operates 20 hours a day, leaving only a four-hour window for maintenance activities. This limited timeframe necessitates the adjusted start times to facilitate the important work required for the airport expansion project.
- Start Times:
- Saturdays: 7:30 a.m.
- Sundays: 7:30 a.m. or noon
- Notable Dates:
- Monday, July 1: Special noon start for Canada Day
- Subsequent noon starts on June 21, June 28, July 5, and July 12
- Shuttle Buses: Replacement shuttle buses will be available during late openings.
Travel Alternatives
Travel options will also be expanded by the STM, Laval’s STL, and Longueuil’s RTL. However, it is important to note that bicycles are not allowed on the shuttle buses.
Additional information regarding the late opening schedule can be accessed on the REM website. Signs in stations and digital displays will remind riders of the updated timings.
