FIFA Launches Women’s Health Project to Enhance Female Athletes’ Performance

As the FIFA 2026 World Cup draws near, FIFA has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative focused on the health and performance of female athletes. This project aims to address the significant gap in research and information about women’s specific needs in sports.
FIFA’s Women’s Health and Performance Project
Launched on Monday, this innovative project consists of a series of online modules. These modules include peer-reviewed research and data on 13 critical topics impacting female athletes. These topics range from pregnancy and fertility to recovery and nutrition.
Current State of Research
Currently, a staggering six percent of sports science research is dedicated solely to women. This lack of focus has resulted in many female athletes training under methods intended primarily for men. This can hinder optimal performance and well-being.
Target Audience and Goals
- Female athletes
- Coaches and administrators at all sport levels
- Staff from teams, leagues, and federations
The FIFA Women’s Health and Performance Project also aims to educate and inform all stakeholders in women’s soccer. Additionally, it seeks to normalize discussions around women’s health by breaking down existing taboos and misconceptions.
Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s chief women’s football officer, emphasized the initiative’s importance. “Our aim is to optimize every female footballer’s health, well-being, and performance,” she stated, highlighting the need for better support tailored to the unique requirements of women in sports.
Building on Previous Initiatives
This new project builds upon a pilot program initiated by FIFA ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. That program successfully provided specialized training aimed at the developmental needs of female players.
As women’s soccer continues to grow globally, FIFA’s initiative seeks to create a more supportive environment for female athletes, ensuring they receive the proper training and attention they deserve.
