Warrington’s M&S Closes Just 11 Months After Opening

The Marks and Spencer (M&S) outlet store located in Warrington’s Riverside Retail Park is set to close its doors just 11 months after its grand opening. The closure will take effect on Saturday, June 20, 2026, due to underwhelming performance since its launch. The regional manager, Pete Dobson, expressed gratitude to customers and staff, highlighting the ongoing operations at nearby M&S locations.

Warrington’s M&S Closes Following Performance Issues

This store was part of M&S’s aggressive expansion strategy, having opened in summer 2025 as one of 16 new locations across the UK in the 2025/26 financial year. Retail experts were initially optimistic, as the outlet offered a range of discounted clothing, kidswear, and select home and beauty products.

Minimal Impact of Store Opening

Shoppers welcomed the arrival of the M&S outlet in Warrington, although some expressed disappointment over the absence of a food hall. Many believed the original M&S store in Golden Square would have been a better fit for the community. Additionally, there were concerns regarding traffic congestion in the retail park area.

Staff Redeployment and Community Response

  • The Warrington outlet hired over 20 new staff members, contributing to a total workforce of 28.
  • According to M&S, all employees will be redeployed to other roles within the company.

The closure is a part of M&S’s broader “store rotation programme,” which prioritizes the opening of food-led stores in more accessible areas. Other recent closures have included branches in high-traffic locations, such as Oxford Street and Swansea, reflecting a shift in consumer shopping habits.

This strategic adjustment by M&S aims to enhance customer experience and respond to evolving market demands. The company will continue to serve Warrington customers through its other stores, including its food hall in Stockton Heath and the larger Gemini Retail Park location.
