Malta Election: Labour Party Secures Victory, Preliminary Results Reveal

In Malta’s recent electoral contest, the Labour Party (PL) achieved a historic fourth consecutive term. Preliminary results indicate a victory for Prime Minister Robert Abela, announced on May 31, 2026. The election, held on a Saturday, resulted in a voter turnout of 87.4%, a slight increase from the general election in 2022.
Labour Party’s Victory and Leadership
Prime Minister Robert Abela, aged 48, addressed reporters, emphasizing that the victory was a triumph for the people. He stated that the results demonstrated a strong mandate for his party. Celebrations erupted across the Mediterranean island, with fireworks marking the occasion.
Election Results and Turnout
Reports from Naxxar, the counting venue, showed that the Labour Party secured a comfortable parliamentary majority, although it appeared narrower than their impressive 55% of the votes in 2022. This general election was noteworthy as it had been called a year early, a decision made by Abela to position the government for stability amid geopolitical challenges.
- Election Date: May 30, 2026
- Voter Turnout: 87.4%
- Previous Electoral Majority: 55% in 2022
Opposition’s Response
Charles Bonello, the general secretary of the Nationalist Party (PN), acknowledged the election results on state broadcaster TVM. Although his party conceded defeat, he noted that they were able to decrease Labour’s majority.
Malta’s Economic Context
Amid growing concerns regarding the economy and international conflicts, Abela’s campaign focused on the Labour Party’s economic achievements since 2013. Last year, Malta’s economy grew by 4%. However, there are worries that increased aviation fuel costs stemming from Middle Eastern tensions may affect tourism and elevate inflation rates.
Political Landscape
Abela’s main rival during the election was Alex Borg, a 30-year-old lawyer and former Mr. World Malta contestant. Abela has served as Prime Minister since 2020, following a political upheaval tied to the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017.
Despite a 2025 Council of Europe report highlighting significant corruption challenges, the topic saw limited discussion during the campaign. Malta, the smallest and most densely populated country in the European Union, has approximately 550,000 inhabitants living on 316 square kilometers.
Current Status of Malta
The country’s economy thrives on tourism, online gaming, and financial services, boasting one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU. As Prime Minister Abela embarks on his new term, the focus will likely remain on maintaining economic stability and addressing pressing geopolitical issues.
