On Sunday, severe storms swept across Quebec, causing extensive damage, particularly in Montreal. The storms led to widespread power outages and significant disruptions.

Montreal Storm Damage Overview

In Montreal, an entire tree fell on Leclaire Street, located between Adam and Sainte-Catherine in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough. The Montreal Fire Department (SIM) reported receiving over 50 emergency calls related to fallen branches and trees affecting power lines.

Emergency Response and Damage Assessment

Firefighters were quickly deployed to assess the situation and mitigate hazards. According to SIM spokesperson Annick Vaillancourt, “Currently, the situation is improving.” The fire department noted damage to several vehicles and buildings, primarily caused by downed electrical wires.

  • No injuries were reported.
  • More than 6,000 households in Montreal experienced power outages before 6 PM.
  • Outages were most severe in the Laurentides region, affecting over 10,460 households.
  • In total, more than 27,000 homes across the province were without electricity.

Restoration Efforts

Hydro-Québec mobilized over 230 teams to restore power as quickly as possible. Residents of the island city are advised to remain cautious as recovery efforts continue amid ongoing weather impacts.

Severe thunderstorms have been affecting various parts of Quebec since Sunday afternoon, prompting Environment Canada to issue alerts for greater Montreal and surrounding areas.
