Storms Sweep Quebec: Hail and Strong Winds Target Montreal and Regions

Severe storms swept through Quebec on Sunday afternoon, prompting Environment Canada to issue official alerts for Greater Montreal and several other regions. The areas affected included La Mauricie, Lanaudière, Drummondville, the Eastern Townships, and the Richelieu Valley.

Impact of Storms on Montreal and Surrounding Areas

Maja Rapaic, a meteorologist from Environment Canada, reported active thunderstorm cells moving through Mauricie and Lanaudière. Hail has already been reported on the ground in these regions.

  • Saint-Hyacinthe, in Montérégie, is under a severe thunderstorm alert.
  • Wind gusts of up to 70 km/h and hail measuring 2 cm are expected.
  • Greater Montreal is now also under an alert as the system moves southward.

Storm Forecast and Aftermath

Residents in Montreal should prepare for strong wind gusts and potential hail within the next hour. This event mirrors the severe weather conditions experienced the previous Friday.

In contrast, Quebec City has largely escaped severe weather, receiving only light rain as the storm system moved past. Calm weather is anticipated for Monday, with minor isolated showers predicted for the afternoon.

As of the current reports, nearly 50,000 power outages have been recorded across Quebec due to the storm’s impact. El-Balad continues to monitor developments as the situation evolves.
