Soo Bin Joo Secures Four-Shot Lead at ShopRite LPGA

In an impressive display of skill at the ShopRite LPGA tournament, Soo Bin Joo achieved a commanding four-shot lead after a challenging second round. The tournament, played at the Seaview Hotel in Galloway, New Jersey, witnessed Joo finish with a score of 3-under 68 on Friday, bringing her total to 8-under 134.
Soo Bin Joo’s Strategy and Performance
Despite difficult weather conditions driven by strong winds from the Atlantic Ocean, Joo maintained her focus. She noted that her game plan shifted compared to her previous round, allowing her to adapt effectively. “I was barely making pars on the golf course today; yesterday was about going for birdies on every hole,” Joo explained, highlighting her mental adjustment.
Challengers Behind Joo
- Chizzy and Aki Iwai (Japan): Both scored 68s, placing them among the contenders.
- Celine Boutier (France): Finished with a score of 72.
- Somi Lee (South Korea): Finished with a score of 69.
- Laetitia Beck (Israel): Fell from the lead after scoring 75.
Beck noted the difficulties presented by the wind, commenting on how it affected her game, particularly with club selections and putting. Her struggles were evident as she was unable to convert opportunities on the greens.
Game Challenges and Conditions
At the tournament, wind conditions challenged players significantly. Eight competitors failed to break an 80, whereas only 11 managed to shoot below 70, primarily in calmer morning conditions. Joo demonstrated remarkable resilience by taking just 25 putts and only dropping one shot during her round.
Upcoming Goals for Joo
Soo Bin Joo is currently ranked No. 252 in the world. Her only prior professional victory was on the Epson Tour two years ago. She expressed her aspirations, saying, “I started playing golf because I want to win a tournament on the LPGA.” Now, with a chance to secure her first LPGA title, she expressed excitement about the possibility. “But right now I just want to get a hot shower. So cold, yeah. Freezing,” she added, highlighting the challenging conditions faced during the event.
ShopRite LPGA Overview
The ShopRite LPGA is notable for being one of two LPGA tournaments contested over 54 holes. This year, the field appears weaker due to scheduling, as it precedes the U.S. Women’s Open in Los Angeles. The cut line was set at 3-over 145, allowing 78 competitors to continue after the second round. Notably, Canada’s Brooke Henderson made the cut at 2-over.
As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on Soo Bin Joo as she seeks to extend her lead and claim her first LPGA victory.
