Expat Cyclists Set Record by Conquering Great Wall in Love-Fueled Race

Sean Gallagher, a 46-year-old English photographer, has strong ties to China. Intrigued by the country since childhood, he moved there at the age of 26. Over the years, he developed a passion for cycling, especially during the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Record-Breaking Journey on the Great Wall
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of his arrival in China, Gallagher decided to embark on an extraordinary cycling adventure. Along with his friend Ben Schuessler, who has lived in China for the same duration, they aimed to set a record by traversing the Great Wall.
Challenges Faced
The duo faced numerous obstacles during their nine-day journey. They encountered:
- Sandstorms
- Freezing rain
- Poor road conditions
- Extreme fatigue
These challenges tested their endurance and resolve as they pedaled along one of the world’s most iconic structures.
Record Completion Time
Gallagher and Schuessler succeeded in establishing the fastest known time for biking the Great Wall. Remarkably, they completed their journey roughly 48 hours after unintentionally crashing a wedding reception high in the mountains.
This cycling achievement not only marks their personal milestones but also underscores their profound connection to China, a country they have both called home for two decades.
