Beloved Exeter Therapy Dog Diagnosed with Cancer, Community Heartbroken

A beloved therapy dog in Exeter, Orsa, has recently been diagnosed with cancer, leaving the community heartbroken. This 57kg Maremma Mountain dog has spent seven years providing comfort to customers at the Exeter Craft Hub and has served as a professional therapy dog in care homes.
Orsa’s Role in the Community
Orsa is well-known for her calm demeanor and fluffy white coat. She has developed a dedicated fan club, with many patrons visiting the craft hub specifically to see her. Some even purchase merchandise inspired by her adorable presence.
Health Concerns and Diagnosis
Last October, Orsa began exhibiting unusual symptoms, including sneezing and nosebleeds. Initially thought to be caused by a stuck grass seed, further tests revealed a tumor in her throat. Unfortunately, surgery is not an option. Orsa is currently receiving radiotherapy in Bristol.
Treatment Journey
So far, Orsa has undergone two rounds of treatment. While she is recovering, the process is taxing. Her owner, Sonya Ellis, mentions that the needles and eyedrops particularly bother her. The financial burden is considerable, with total costs expected to reach £20,000, depending on additional treatment needs.
Community Support
To alleviate the hefty veterinary bills, fans of Orsa have rallied together. Donations have been collected both online and in the shop. Sonya has already invested over £6,000 for CT scans and radiotherapy, relying on community support to help cover expenses.

Sonya notes that the atmosphere in the shop has been filled with tears and hope as everyone wishes for Orsa’s recovery.
Future Plans
Although Orsa is currently resting at home, she still enjoys the company of familiar faces when she feels up to it. Sonya remains optimistic as they cherish the time spent together. A fundraiser is active to assist with Orsa’s ongoing veterinary needs.
