Portugal Strike to Disrupt 500 Flights, Public Transport Next Week

Air travelers in Portugal are expected to face significant disruptions next week due to a planned general strike. The strike, scheduled for June 3, is organized by several trade unions and will particularly affect cabin crew members from the SNPVAC union.

Impact on Flights

Ricardo Penarróias, the SNPVAC president, indicated that approximately 500 flights could be canceled as a result of the strike. Major airlines such as Tap Air, easyJet, and Ryanair are likely to experience operational challenges.

Airline Responses

  • Ryanair: The airline claimed it does not anticipate disruptions and will maintain its normal operations.
  • easyJet: A spokesperson acknowledged that some flight disruptions are likely, stating they will inform affected customers directly.
  • Tap Air: Passengers holding tickets for flights on June 3 can change their travel plans without fees, either moving their flights earlier or postponing them.

Reasons for the Strike

The general strike has been called by CGTP, Portugal’s largest labor union, as a protest against proposed government labor reforms. These reforms could ease hiring and firing processes for companies and increase outsourcing capabilities.

Public Transport Affected

The strike’s impact extends beyond aviation. The transport union FECTRANS has also joined the strike, affecting services such as:

  • Lisbon Metro
  • Porto Metro
  • Commuter rail Fertagus

Workers from other sectors, including health and education, are also expected to participate in the strike, further intensifying the disruptions.
