Peter and Mickey Bowen Fined £5,000; Grade 2 Winner Disqualified for Substance Violation

Peter and Mickey Bowen, a father-son training duo, have been fined a total of £5,000 for breaching horse racing regulations. This penalty comes after two of their horses tested positive for prohibited substances in 2024. One of the horse disqualifications involves the Grade 2 winner Flying Fortune.
Details of the Fines and Disqualifications
The disciplinary hearing revealed that the Bowens were fined £4,000 for violating rule (K)2.2. This rule prohibits the presence of any category B substance in a horse’s system during a race engagement. They also received an additional £1,000 penalty for failing to maintain accurate records as required by rule (D)24.
Horses Involved
- Flying Fortune — Originally won the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle at Chepstow in October 2024.
- Olivers Travels — Found to contain dexamethasone following a race victory at Worcester on August 21, 2024.
Both horses have been disqualified as a result. Flying Fortune’s winning time of seven-and-a-half lengths is now attributed to the runner-up, Intense Approach, trained by John McConnell. Similarly, Galloping Pride, trained by Emma Lavelle, has moved from second to first following Olivers Travels’ original victory.
Implications for the Trainers
Since May 2025, Mickey Bowen has been the sole trainer under the partnership’s license. They faced scrutiny from the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) during the hearing, with Joseph Sinclair representing the BHA and Rory Mac Niece representing the Bowens. The disciplinary panel approved the plea agreement put forth by both parties, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to racing regulations.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity in horse racing and the consequences of non-compliance with established rules.
