Patrice Bélanger Criticizes Canadiens During Montreal Victory Tribute

Patrice Bélanger, a well-known host, expressed his dissatisfaction following a tribute to the Montreal Victory during a Canadiens game. The tribute was criticized as being rushed and lacking proper acknowledgment for the team that recently won the Walter Cup.

Tribute to Montreal Victory Criticized

Bélanger took to Instagram to voice his concerns. He remarked on how the tribute was conducted during a television commercial break. While viewers saw a quick interview and a showing of the Walter Cup, he felt it was insufficient. “It was just a small thing done quickly to say they did something,” he stated.

Importance of Proper Recognition

  • Bélanger emphasized that the Canadiens had an opportunity to give the Montreal Victory a grander platform at Centre Bell.
  • He expressed embarrassment over how the tribute was handled, saying, “But we didn’t see them… It’s embarrassing.”

NHL Restrictions on Tribute

Chantal Machabée, the Canadiens’ vice president of hockey communications, provided insight into the situation. She explained that the National Hockey League (NHL) has implemented rules that restrict teams from conducting pre-game ceremonies. This rule has been in place since mid-March and applies even during playoff games.

Machabée noted, “We’ve found a way to honor the Victory, and that’s what’s important. They deserved that acknowledgment, and they received applause.”

Bélanger’s Hope for Future Success

In a subsequent interview with 98.5 FM, Bélanger reiterated his sentiments. He expressed hope for the Montreal Victory to win five consecutive Walter Cups. However, he lamented the missed opportunity to celebrate the team’s historic first championship properly. “I think we let it slip away,” he concluded.
