CBI Arrests Pune Coaching Academy COO in NEET Exam Leak Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its investigation into the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak case, arresting key figures from a Pune coaching academy. Recently, two individuals were taken into custody, bringing the total number of arrests in this ongoing probe to 13.

Details of the Arrests

Among the arrested is Tejas Harshadkumar Shah, a faculty member specializing in Physics at the Dr Abhang Prabhu Medical Academy (APMA) located in Shivajinagar, Pune. Shah is also identified as the Chief Operating Officer of the academy. Alongside him, Dr Manoj Shirure, a physician from Latur, has also been arrested.

  • Tejas Harshadkumar Shah: Arrested for allegedly receiving leaked Physics questions from an accomplice.
  • Dr Manoj Shirure: Accused of helping three students, including the son of a coaching center owner, access leaked Chemistry questions.

Allegations and Institutional Response

The CBI claims that Shah obtained the leaked questions from Manisha Havaldar, a Physics teacher and principal of a local school, who had been arrested earlier in the investigation. Dr Shirure’s role was reportedly crucial in facilitating access to these questions for students connected to the coaching center.

Sachin Haldavnekar, the chairperson of APMA, defended the academy’s reputation, stating that Shah’s involvement is purely personal, emphasizing that the institution maintains a commitment to fair educational practices. Haldavnekar clarified that Shah’s role was primarily administrative, managing office staff rather than being directly involved in academic integrity issues.

Background on the Allegations

Shah’s communication with Havaldar was described as an attempt to clarify curriculum topics. Haldavnekar noted that Shah sought advice on topics relevant to NEET that overlap with other competitive exams, which raised concerns about potential prior knowledge regarding Havaldar’s involvement in the leak.

The NEET-UG examination, a significant assessment for medical aspirants in India, has come under scrutiny as investigations reveal deeper connections in this alleged malpractice. The CBI continues to pursue leads related to this case as it seeks to uphold the integrity of the examination process.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns surrounding educational integrity but also demonstrates the steps being taken by authorities to address these serious issues.
