HP Probes BIOS Updates Causing Boot Loop Issues for Premium Laptops

Recent reports indicate that HP is facing significant customer complaints regarding BIOS updates for its premium laptops. Users have highlighted issues such as boot loop failures, increased fan noise, and Blue Screens of Death (BSOD) after installing the updates.

HP BIOS Updates Causing Boot Loop Issues

The complaints emerged prominently in April when an owner of the ZBook Ultra G1a, a high-end mobile workstation, reported that a BIOS update caused their device to freeze during the boot process. This situation is not an isolated case; many other users have voiced similar concerns across various forums, including extensive discussions on Reddit.

Identified Problematic BIOS Versions

The updates in question have been flagged as critical and were automatically deployed via Windows Update. Users have pointed to specific problematic BIOS versions:

  • ZBook Ultra G1a: Versions 01.04.03 and 01.04.05
  • EliteBook X G1a: Versions 01.03.11 and 01.05.00

Affected users are struggling to revert to a previous, functional version of the BIOS. Although there is an option to stop the update prior to installation, this does not assist users whose devices have already been impacted. Some individuals have reported limited success in using the network BIOS downgrade feature, but this requires an HP USB-C to Ethernet dongle.

Historical Context of BIOS Issues

This is not the first time HP has encountered problems related to BIOS updates. In 2024, a previous update rendered several devices completely unusable, leading consumers to face expensive repair costs. These ongoing dilemmas come as Microsoft is enhancing the reliability of Windows and more closely monitoring third-party drivers, which are also utilized for BIOS updates.

HP’s Response to Complaints

In response to the growing outcry, HP has acknowledged the issues, stating, “HP is aware of purported BIOS issues and is looking into the matter.” The company has encouraged affected customers to reach out to its support teams for guidance.

Future Outlook

On May 20, Richard Hughes, from the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS), announced HP’s partnership with Lenovo and Dell as premier sponsors. This move aligns with an initiative aimed at improving firmware update processes. Customers hope that HP will focus on enhancing the quality of its BIOS updates as it participates in this open-source firmware project.
