BYD Unveils UK’s Cheapest PHEV, Compact as a Fiesta

The BYD Dolphin G DM-i is set to make its debut as the cheapest plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the UK. Designed specifically for the European market, this new model will offer a unique alternative to both petrol and electric competitors.
Key Features of the BYD Dolphin G DM-i
Scheduled for sale in the UK this autumn, the Dolphin G DM-i has a starting price projected to be under £20,000. This compact vehicle measures 4160 mm in length and is closely related to BYD’s Dolphin Surf EV.
Target Market and Competitors
The Dolphin G will compete against popular models such as:
- Renault Clio
- Volkswagen Polo
- Toyota Yaris
Unlike its rivals that typically use either mild-hybrid or full-hybrid systems, the Dolphin G features a full plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Performance Capabilities
Details of the Super Hybrid system remain limited, but it is expected to share technology with BYD’s Atto 2 DM-i SUV. Specifically, the system includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine that functions as a generator, powering an electric motor that drives the front wheels.
Remarkably, the Dolphin G offers a combined range of over 621 miles using both petrol and electric power, positioning it as a standout option in its class.
Production and Strategic Vision
The Dolphin G will likely be produced at BYD’s new facility in Hungary. According to executive vice-president Stella Li, the European B-segment is critical for the company’s growth. She aims for the Dolphin G to redefine consumer expectations for compact vehicles in the growing electric car landscape.
This model marks the beginning of a broader range of B- and C-segment vehicles that BYD plans to manufacture for Europe. Li has emphasized her goal for BYD to be perceived as a European brand, further solidifying their commitment to the market.
